Founded in 1937 at Spirit Lake, Iowa, by Berkley Bedell, then only 16 years old, Berkley began modestly with the artisanal manufacture of artificial flies made from dog hair and chicken feathers.

After his service in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War, Berkley Bedell founded Berkley & Company in 1945 and oriented the company towards the production of nylon fishing threads. In 1959, the launch of the legendary Trilene marks a major turning point: its resistance and ease of use revolutionize the monofilament market.
